Episode 107 – Edinburgh, Scotland

Here is the link to my Air B&B in Edinburgh.

Here’s some suggestions for Edinburgh pubs, shops and restaurants near the Air B&B close to Haymarket Station:
Pubs:
The Jolly Botonist, 256 Morrison st. The closest good pub 7 mins walk – specializes in gins, always a lively atmosphere.
Teuchters, 26 William st. The closest good whisky pub. On a quant cobbled lane 10 mins walk.
Brewdog, 50 Lothian Rd. Brewdog is a quirky Scottish brewery that now have several pubs. 20 mins walk. Their best selling beer is Punk IPA, which is first class and available in many Edinburgh pubs.
1820 Rooftop bar on top of Johnnie Walker Princes Street, 145 Princes St. 15 mins walk. Amazing views of the city and lovely on a sunny day. You usually need to book on their website.
The Standing Order, 62 George St. 25 mins walk. In the heart of the New Town, in a spectacular domed former banking hall and they have very cheap but good drinks and food.
The Devil’s Advocate, 9 Advocate’s Close 30 mins. Hidden in the heart of the Old Town most visitors would never find it.

For food shopping the well-stocked Co-op on Dalry Rd is 2 minutes away. It’s open from 7am to 10pm 7 days a week and will meet most of your needs.
Alternatively there is a Lidl supermarket 2 minutes further out Dalry Rd (heading out of town). It’s a bit cheaper than the Co-op and does good fresh bread and morning Croissants, Pain au Chocolat etc. There is also a very nice fresh fruit and veg green grocers called Fruttivendolo 100m before the Co-op.
We’re fortunate to have a cluster of some of Edinburgh’s best restaurants just 3-4 minutes from the apartment on Dalry Rd.
First Coast – specialises in Scottish sea food. If you can get there by 6.30 pm (Tues, Wed, Thurs) they have an excellent value 3 course menu for £16
Pizzeria 1926 – A cheap but very good Naples Pizza restaurant, always busy and with a buzz of quirky fun about it
Mia Kitchen – A bustling Italian restaurant
Xiang Bala – Unique in Edinburgh, this specializes in Chinese hotpots. For £16.50 select a seemingly unlimited amount of ingredients to add to your hotpot and cook at your table. Always full of Orientals and great fun if you like to try something different.
La Casa Tapas and Mezze – The area’s newest restaurant, a bustling Spanish tapas restaurant.
Laconda de Gusti – A bit pricey but truly one of Edinburgh’s best restaurants. Specializes in fresh Scottish seafood cooked with Italian flare. Top quality but unpretentious and relaxed. If you want one fancy meal out during your stay this is the place to go. Treat yourself to their legendary plateau of Charcoal grilled Scottish fish and crustaceans (£28).

Also if you’re looking for suggestions for things you should do in Edinburgh:
Meander down the Royal mile from the castle to Holyrood, not necessarily going into the castle as it’s £18.50 but explore some of the closes (lanes) and look at Holyrood Place parliament at the bottom. You pay to go in the Palace but you can admire it from through the gates.
If you’ve the energy climb Arthurs seat for the best 360 degree views of Edinburgh and surrounds. (45 mins up 20 mins down)
Climb up Calton Hill (only 5 mins) to for almost as good views but with less work and puzzle at Edinburgh’s Parthenon.
Pose for a selfie with Greyfriars Bobby, Scotland’s most photographed statue.
Wander round Greyfriars graveyard, famous for its gothic tombs, faithful dog and grave of Lord Voldemort.
Go on a walking tour of Edinburgh. New Europe tours are always good and are free – tips allowed. Leave from High st on the Royal mile
Go on an evening ghost tour eg Mercat tours. Leave from High st on the Royal mile
Visit the national museum of Scotland on Chambers street – free and no need to book.
Visit the new Johnnie Walker whisky experience on Princes St. Very slick and professional tours but not cheap at £25, (including tasting samples). They also have a rooftop terrace restaurant / café / bar with great views of Edinburgh. Lovely on a sunny day – drinking whisky is not compulsory you can pop in for a morning coffee. You usually need to book on their website though.
Have fun whatever you do.

Don’t forget about Stirling Castle in Stirling, Scotland.  An easy day trip from Edinburgh.  Go see William Wallace’s memorial as well while you are there.  It’s a bus ride away from the train station.

If you have been thinking about getting one of these credit cards use my links: Capital One Venture X, Southwest Credit Card, and the Hyatt Credit Card. If you use my links to sign up for the card I get some points, and again it doesn’t cost you anything to help out the show.  Remember, if you are unable to pay your credit cards off on a monthly basis then it is not worth getting these.  Thanks so much!
